Romania is a country with a turbulent history and a complex current state of affairs; a country which, as Mircea Eliade said, was a bridge between the Byzantium and the West, between the Slavic, Oriental and Mediterranean worlds. Here we intend to show the true view of Romania. In our opinion, only reliable information, discussion and cooperation can change the image of the country, which nowadays is still considered by Poles to be terra incognita - an exotic, mythical land. The history of contacts between our nations shows, that despite the existing relations of political forces in Europe, we were always able to be partners; partners who differed from one another but treated each other with respect and were ready to help when the other was in need. The Polish-Romanian Society in Krakow intends to become a platform of information, exchange and discussion. Discussing the past and accurately describing current affairs, we want to build the future based on truth and to create the conditions for cooperation. In some small enclaves in the territory of the present Romania, Moldova and Ukraine you can still find Poles, Romanians and Ukrainians living together and carrying on their multinational tradition. There have been almost no dangerous ethnic conflicts in Romania between these people throughout history; we should remember that our traditions of ethnic coexistence are at least as good as those in the West. Based on this heritage we are able to build the future. The role of Krakow in the Polish-Romanian cultural relations has always been always special. Although we do not want to depreciate the role of other political and cultural centers, it has to be stated that the Romanian-Krakow relations are special because of their continuousness and strength [...] Beside the Romanians, especially the Moldovians, there were also Hungarians and Saxons from Transylvania and Moldova who leaned towards Krakow or who kept strong relations with the citizens of Krakow (not only Poles). Thus, Krakow has been the point of value exchange, a center simultaneously attracting and radiating; it has been both a joint and a "catapult" in the area of culture [....]. (Mihai Mitu, Cracovia si relatiile culturale romano-polone). We believe that Krakow is a very special place where the efforts for a stable and positive change in Polish-Romanian relations can successfully be continued - and this is our intention. All interested people are invited to contribute.
